Preparing Future Astronauts to Explore the Moon and Space

On International Moon Day, the 26 young people from SLI - Sustainable Living Innovators were challenged to design a moon base.

July 20, 2024

This day recognizes the achievements of the space race, raises awareness of the importance of space exploration and humanity's return to the Moon. It was initiated by the United Nations with the support of Lockheed Martin (a space and defence company).

It takes place annually on 20 July to commemorate NASA's Apollo 11 space mission, which in 1969 resulted in the first human to set foot on the Moon, astronaut Neil Armstrong.

"IMD 2024 Portugal" was organized as part of the 5th SLI - Sustainable Living Innovators edition, aimed at secondary school and university students.

At SLI we reinforce the importance of space exploration to improve life on Earth, promoting sustainability, technological innovation and scientific collaboration, to engage the public and increase the visibility of the importance of space activities with new generations, highlighting the benefits of lunar and space exploration for society. A unique experience that brings CEiiA together with the younger generations to jointly build a better future from space.

Taking advantage of the celebration of International Moon Day and projecting that in the near future we will have a recurring presence of humanity on the Moon, SLI will challenge young ‘innovators’ to design a lunar base, technologies to support astronauts in the challenges of lunar exploration or the new generation of spacecraft that can transport humans between the Earth and the Moon.
